Acid drainage and leaching studies
Leaching is a natural process by which the alteration of rocks occurs by contact with acidic waters. In mining, both open pit and underground, the excavation work leaves the sulphide minerals present in the rocks, exposed to the interaction with air and surface waters. This interaction produces sulfuric acid which, when dissolved in water, gives rise to sulfated acid solutions.
Acid drainage is the runoff through the rocks of sulfated acid solutions derived from the biological leaching and oxidation of sulphide minerals. These solutions may contain high amounts of dissolved solids; sulfates; oxides and heavy metals. Uncontrolled acid drainage can generate considerable environmental impact, leading to a significant challenge for the viability and sustainability of mining projects.
